Communication Severity Scales

February 3, 2023

9:00 am to 2:00 pm

Sonoma County Office of Education, Oak Rooms 5340 Skylane Boulevard, Santa Rosa, CA 95403

This workshop will share the development and utilization of the Communication Severity Scales (CSS). The CSS were developed by the LSH workgroup in the North Inland SELPA in San Diego County. They are designed to address the need for using assessment data and professional expertise to recommend the appropriate level of speech and language services for individual students for consideration by the IEP team. Tools will be shared for determining when an assessment is indicated for potential speech or language disabilities for EL students. Participants will utilize the information for students on their caseloads to apply the CSS.

  • Learner Outcomes: After completing this program, participants will be able to:
      • Develop an understanding of how and why the Communication Severity Scales were developed.
      • Be able to use the scales to obtain a severity rating score when reviewing standardized assessments, informal observations, and consideration of educational impact of the student's speech and language skills.
      • Gain confidence in making service delivery recommendations based on the overall impact of a student's speech and/or language skill deficits.
      • Have a better understanding of when it is appropriate to exit students from speech and language services.
    • ** Four Continuing Professional Development Credits (CPD) are available for this class. Sponsored by the Sonoma County SELPA PDP #371. *
