Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) services are designed for young children (birth to 5 years of age) with disabilities. Services are designed to support children’s development and allow for their participation in developmentally appropriate early childhood activities.
Early Start is the early intervention program providing services to eligible infants and toddlers (birth to 36 months of age) with disabilities as well as services to their families. Eligible children have a developmental delay, an established risk condition, or are considered at high risk of having a substantial developmental delay.
In Sonoma County, Early Start services are provided by North Bay Regional Center (NBRC), Sonoma County SELPA, and Santa Rosa City Schools DHH Program. If you have a concern about your baby’s development, you may call the Early Start Warmline at (707) 591-0170.
Preschool Special Education is the early intervention program providing services to eligible children at 3 to 4 years of age. Services are targeted at the child’s specific needs and are designed to support overall development, allow for participation in developmentally appropriate activities, and prepare for school.
Special Education services are provided by the child’s school district of residence. To make a referral regarding concerns for your preschooler’s development, contact your local school district. To find your local school district using your home address, the County of Sonoma has a service that allows you to look up your district by street address. You may also contact the Sonoma County Office of Education at (707) 524-2600 for help.
Special Education for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) provides services to eligible children 4 to 5 years of age who are enrolled in a TK program. Services are targeted at the child’s specific needs and are designed to support the child’s access to the educational program. Special Education services are provided by the child’s school in which they are enrolled. To make a referral regarding concerns about your TK child’s education, contact your child’s school.
